The Apostle John skips the sham trial before the phony high priest, Caiaphas, and brings us to the Praetorium (judgement hall-KJV). The building complex housed Herod's fortress and the barracks of the Roman soldiers who had taken part in Jesus' arrest and who would later crucify Him. Pilate would have known of Jesus' "triumphal entry." He also would have known of the near riot caused by Jesus' cleansing of the temple. He would have needed to sign-off on the detachment of soldiers sent to the Garden of Gethsemane. His wife knew about Him (Matthew 26:19)
