After God causes this picture of the refining fire being sent throughout Egypt and all of the Egyptians being burned by it, He now sends the picture of the nation being stoned. The warnings and the plagues had caused some to fear God, so they did not receive the stoning. They heard the threatenings of God and they fled for refuge into their houses as they were commanded. This should be a reminder to those who are among us who have not believed in the Lord Jesus Christ that the day will come without warning when He will send the fierceness of His wrath on those who do not fear Him. Now is the time to flee to Christ for refuge. God gives us the picture in Egypt of those who did not fear God, some survived but their servants and livestock did not. They left them out in the field and they were stoned with hailstones and struck with lightning until they died. This was not just a terrible hailstorm. It was accompanied by lightning that was striking their servants and their flocks. This is the first plague where we see widespread death. Not on the elite who are able to be in their houses, but on their slaves and animals who they send out in the field. In God's all-wise providence, sometimes the consequences for our sins are greater on those who are under our authority than they are on us.
