Having looked into the future at the latter days and then at the Day of the Lord, Isaiah now turns his attention back to the present problem of Judah. The theme again is the sin of Judah and the judgment of God. This is a tragic depiction of the collapse of a society and of a people who had enjoyed the great blessing of God. In this sermon I will carefully develop what Isaiah reveals about the nature of the collapse itself, for the principles are universally applicable. From there I will present what happens when such a society begins to reap what they have sown, and what follows is the unavoidable and catastrophic judgment of God. What is so lamentable is that it did not have to go this way for Judah. If they would only listen to God and take heed to what He said, then everything would have gone in another direction entirely. They could have been restored with the blessing of God upon them. But they would not listen! I close with a brief admonition in which I try to encourage the people of God to not make the same mistake today, especially as “the day” approaches. May God be pleased to bless His word as it is preached today!
