God told Moses what was going to happen as a result of this last plague that He was bringing against Egypt. There was a plan in place and as a result they needed to be ready to take care of everything according to God's plan. Even today God is still calling His people to make themselves ready and is giving fair warning to those who oppose Him that His plans will not be changed and that they can be counted on to succeed.
