While the Lord has made clear in the preceding verses that our election is unconditional, and that He loves us because He loves us, if we are His elect people we will desire to obey His commandments out of love for Him. God also makes it clear that while entry into the covenant is something that He brings about, the blessings that flow from it are conditioned on our obedience. Therefore God warned the Israelites that if they obeyed they would receive His promised blessings of Land, Health, and Increase. If they ignored or broke His commandments, particularly via idolatry, they would obtain the reverse.
