Immediately after his teaching in the synagogue of Capernaum, and casting a demon out of a man who was present, Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. There he healed Peter's Mother-in-law, and apparently spent a restful afternoon. But by sundown (the end of the Sabbath) all those who were sick or possessed came to Him for healing. After what was likely a tiring night of service, we read that Jesus arose a great while before day to go to a secluded place to commune with His Father. But the disciples found Him in the morning, and told Him there were more people seeking Him. He told them He must go into the next towns and preach there also. He went throughout Galilee, preaching and healing. The chapter ends with Jesus being approached by a leper, in violation of the Ceremonial law. In this passage we note: The supposed "first pope" was married. Jesus frequently had long seasons of prayer, and so should we. Healing is important, but it is not most important, all those Jesus healed were dead within a few decades. But those who responded in faith to Christ's message live today. Jesus touched the leper. Human life takes precedence over the laws of men, and the presence of the lawmaker supersedes the law. We learned that ministry can be time consuming and inconvenient, and we illustrated it with the conversion of our own Harry and Nelda Ring. Jesus foresaw that the leper He healed would tell everyone what Jesus did, and as a result, Jesus would have to stay outside the city, in desert places, but He healed him anyway. We have a disease worse than leprosy, a sinful nature which cannot be cleansed by human means.
