Self turns the mind and affections to objects which it desires - to subjects which make it feel good or which concern it. Self does not care to be exposed for what it is - selfish, self-righteous, self-exalting and self-indulgent. You and I are far more effected and directed by self than we are even aware. If you are a Christian, Christ's work of sanctification is a work of increasingly killing your old self and replacing YOU with Himself.
