David numbered the people so he could boast about the size of his army, which is why “the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel” (2 Sam. 24: 15). God wanted those Jews trusting Him, not their army.
Psalm 20: 7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
It’s never the size or strength of the army. The Nation Of Israel took the Promised Land because they trusted the Lord.
They left somethings unfinished and later (after the Book Of Joshua) those left undone caused them problems.
