Over the past several chapters, we've seen quite a bit about the promises of God given to Abraham. Here we see Yahweh appear directly to Abraham, and this time even to Sarah as well, to once again reiterate the promise that within another year, Abraham and Sarah, who by that time were 99 and 89 years old, respectively (or very close), would give birth to a natural born son, Isaac, the son of Promise.
And in Sarah's response this time, we learn again what fear can do. Just as we saw with Abraham in Ch. 12, fear can lead us to sin, especially when it comes to lying instead of telling the truth.
But this passage also prompts us to ask and answer the question, why did God make Abraham and Sarah wait so long--25 years!!--before they received the promise?
