“ The rod in Psalm 23 ” Psalm 23 says "The Lord is my shepherd...Thy rod and thy staff comfort me." A shepherd uses his rod (crook) to lead, protect, rescue, and count the sheep. He does not beat the sheep. Discipline is important but includes much more than punishment, and there are lots of ways to punish without beating with a rod.
