Jesus had been spending time teaching in the Temple while He was in Jerusalem. He had entered the city during the triumphal entry and cleansed the Temple of the money changers and those who sold doves, lambs, and other sacrifices. The Messiah had challenged the man-made structures of religions and was not afraid to expose the corruption or bad fruit that he saw at the Temple among the religious leaders. Today, we are going to catch a glimpse of who Jesus thinks is a good model of discipleship or spirituality. Will it be the people that the common people looked up to as religious professionals or would it be a poor widow? With clear and precise vision, Jesus x-rays their hearts and as the Master Radiologist, He shares with us what He saw in the religious efforts of the leaders of His day and the heart of a poor widow. This should be a sobering reminder of how the Lord despises lip service, play-acting with church, and self-righteousness that blinds people to the true nature and depravity of their hearts. He loves the quiet, faithful, and cheerful giver. I must confess I was among the worst of these pretenders before the Lord Jesus rescued me. Thank God He changed my heart and transformed my life. Today, the title of this message will be True Devotion to God. We will consider 1) Jesus Condemns the Religious Show 2) Jesus Celebrates True Devotion
