It has been building for a few chapters, and now it is here, THE END. It is not really the end in many respects: it is not the end of kingship in Israel, it is not the end of unrighteous kings in Israel, and it is not the end of the book of Samuel since the story will unfold in what we call 2nd Samuel. What we do see here however, is the end of Saul, a tragic figure and an evil king. As Saul's sons drop in death, Saul finds himself virtually alone on the battlefield facing the ferocious assault of the Philistines as the rest of the army made a hasty retreat. Faced with the near prospect of his own demise, instead of seeking the Lord, Saul seeks assisted suicide. His armor bearer however would not oblige his request, so Saul did what Saul all too often did: he decided to take matters into his own hands and he fell on his own sword. Darkness and despair fills the text of 1 Samuel 31 with Saul's suicide, but light breaks forth on the literary horizon as we look forward to David, the Lord's anointed king in waiting.
