In the minds of first century Jews, angels were considered to be the highest beings in God's created order and thus to be worshiped, esteemed, and honored. Angels acted as mediators when God gave the law to Moses. So, if the writer to the Hebrews is to convince his readers that Jesus Christ is mediator of a new, superior covenant, he must convince them that Jesus Christ is superior to angels. He does so by citing seven Old Testament passages, from their own Bible to convince them of the superiority of Jesus over angels. Jesus is superior because of the title He inherited, which is "Son of God." He is superior by virtue of being the object of the Angels' worship. And He is superior by virtue of his superior position and power as Sovereign King, Angels are Christ's servants, sent to minister to us who are heirs of salvation. Whereas Jesus Christ is sovereign over all! He is far better than the angels, and thus we should listen to and heed what he has to say to us today.
