JEZEBEL: Some historians teach that a woman named Jezebel lived in Thyatira during this period. They believe the temple of Sambethe and the shrine located there were associated with this Jezebel. Perhaps this woman claimed to be a prophetess, thus infecting the Christian church established there. Another teaching found in the book of Acts reveals that Lydia was the first convert in the region. Acts 16:14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. The Bible tells us that Lydia got saved in Philippi but may have returned to Thyatira to express her newfound belief. She may never have been appropriately discipled because she relocated to an area with no other disciples. Did she become the domineering woman who plotted for control through manipulating others? The evil influence of Jezebel's teaching within Christianity is incalculable. It is clear from the text that her doctrines produced both fornication and the eating of things offered to idols. Interestingly, this is the doctrine Balaam introduced to God's people mentioned in Revelation 2:14. No doubt there is a strong correlation between these two characters. The doctrines of Jezebel (in conjunction with those of the Nicolaitanes and Balaam) are the corrupting foundation that would eventually infect and pervert much of Christianity. The threat to the church did not come from persecution outside the church but from compromise within. Here are a few "Jezebels" with their founding institutions and dates.
