The problem was really a social welfare problem, caring for the widows in need. The other side of the problem also was that the Apostles had to give themselves to the greatest need of the hour and that was teaching and preaching and praying.
The Apostles could have spend their whole lives doing a great social work amongst the people that were added to the Church.
There was a danger of them becoming social workers rather than Gospel preachers. That’s always a danger in Christianity.
