God's orchestration of the salvation of Cornelius and his household wasn't merely to demonstrate His intention to save Gentiles as well as Jews. He intended this Gentile Pentecost to impress upon His fledgling Church that the "Christ event" had profoundly and forever transformed His covenant household. No longer are covenant identity and unity tied to physical or religious criteria; now and forever, membership in the covenant household - the "commonwealth of Israel" - is solely a matter of union with Christ. Previously, Gentiles had entered the covenant community by joining themselves to Israel through circumcision and adoption of the Sinai covenant ("Law of Moses"). The principle of union with Israel continues, but now it is union with the True Israel - Christ Himself - through the circumcision done by the Spirit and entrance into the New Covenant in His blood.
