The New Testament does not allow us to assume that we are saved. On the contrary, the NT challenges believers to examine themselves to be sure they are in the faith. The point of the parable of the soils is that not all who respond to the Gospel are truly saved. Simon Magus provides a sobering example for us in Acts 8:9-24.
There are typically five common things that people rest their claim of salvation on: 1) A past event or praying a certain prayer; 2) Living a moral life; 3) Knowledge of and agreement with the facts of the Gospel; 4) Regular participation in religious activity; and, 5) Position in ministry. While any of the above mentioned situations may be a component of a true salvation experience, they do not in and of themselves prove the validity of a profession of faith. The only reliable proof of salvation is a transformed life.
