After describing how the church is being built upon Christ as living stones resting on a living stone, he then makes his argument from the Old Testament. He quotes from Isaiah 28 which contrast those who rest on the cornerstone as different than the Israelites who just heard babbling when they heard the Word of God. He quotes Psalm 118 which declares that through the Jews rejecting the Messiah that the gate for the righteous is opened. Peter then quotes Isaiah 8 which emphasizes that God is to be our fear and our dread, but to both houses of Israel He is a snare and a trap. Many of the arguments that Peter has been making such as the necessity of holiness, the fear of God and the Word of God, he shows from the Old Testament the physical house had to be replaced with a spiritual house. The passage concludes with the importance of that spiritual house. We are made a nation, a priesthood, and a people to proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
