This letter to the Galatians is all about the temptation to boast: to boast in works, to boast in law keeping, to boast in human wisdom, to boast in the fellowship of men outside of Christ. As Paul finishes his letter to these who are under attack, he reminds them, and emphasizes, that because of the work of Christ in his heart, the world has been crucified to him, and Paul himself has been crucified to the world. Paul now ends the letter in a prayer of sorts. Paul now prays that this crucifixion would result in his being able to resist the temptation to boast in anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, and, that he would indeed boast in the cross of Christ. So much so that Paul teaches that those who have been crucified with Christ Jesus, have nothing within themselves, nor in the rest of creation, to boast, but desire only to boast in the cross alone. |
