Jesus’ tears on Palm Sunday at first seem inconsistent with what was happening around Him. A great crowd of people ushered Him into the City of David, hailing Him as their coming King. They praised God for His mighty works among them. They even quoted Scripture. So why is Jesus crying? “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it. ” (Luke 19:41, NIV). This is only the second time in the gospels that Jesus is shown to be weeping openly, the first being at Lazarus’ grave. But this time it was different. Jesus’ mourned loudly over Jerusalem, despite the celebration it held in His honor. As God, He was able to see into people’s hearts and discern the truth about their commitments to Him. In this Palm Sunday message we turn to Luke’s gospel and consider, “The Savior’s tears.”
