“Missions is the heartbeat of the Church.” An assembly of believers that either ignores or minimizes the Great Commission is not a New Testament church. What is the secret to the progress of the Gospel and the perpetuation of the Church after 2,000 years? It is the fact that believers who have themselves been the beneficiaries of the Gospel have taken seriously their scriptural and moral obligation to “pass it on” to others.
God's work must be done in God's way, and if it is – as missionary Hudson Taylor remarked – it will not lack God's supply. Paul challenged the Corinthian believers to enable him to “preach the Gospel in the regions beyond.” They had become enamored with some false apostles who followed Paul's ministry at Corinth, and they were neglecting the missionary mandate.
Missions is God's idea from start to finish. Man's sin and subsequent fall in the Garden did not catch God by surprise. The death of Christ was no afterthought or contingency plan, but the eternal purpose of God. What a privilege therefore to be “workers together with God” in His grand scheme of redemption! Will we take new steps of faith to advance the proven message of the Gospel, impelled by a passion for God's glory?
