Paul tell him "to be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus," that is, he should put into practice what he already possesses of Christ's grace. Additionally, Timothy is commanded to entrust the gospel to faithful men. Then Paul gives him some practical ways to be strengthened in grace: suffer like a loyal soldier, compete like a disciplined athlete, and be a sharer in the harvest of the gospel that is the result of hard work like a diligent farmer. Paul has presented these masterful metaphors for Timothy (and us) to think about, looking to the Lord for understanding.
