It has been said that many a true word was spoken through false teeth! When the Jerusalem populace welcomed Jesus on Palm Sunday they did not realise how much truth they spoke. It can be that way with us, too. We have more than we realise in the gospel - salvation is not remote, it is in the very words we speak (Romans 10:6-10). When they quoted Psalm 118 they were bringing the best news ever - God had come to save his people. Israel was harassed and helpless; so is humanity. But no one can hinder God our long-awaited Saviour. Like them, we should be careful what to expect of Christ. He does not promise a political or economic deliverance, but salvation from sin and the gift of eternal life. Christ is the perfect blend of meekness and majesty - riding upon a donkey rather than asserting his power. He brings truth in place of falsehood, and the kingdom of God that does not lie in power or prestige and encompasses all nations. But he IS our King, and we are his subjects. The appropriate response is to welcome him with faith and penitence when he comes in the gospel, to rejoice in what we see of his work in the world, and to look forward to his return, praying, 'Come Lord Jesus'.
