The doctrine of providence describes God's governance and upholding of all things that are created for the glory of Himself and the good of His people. Nothing comes by chance but by the sovereign hand of God, and His actions are always according to His character. The outworking of God's providence neither does violence to man's will nor violates second causes; man remains responsible for his actions. The Lord uses ordinary means to bring about His providence, but He is free to work outside of the norms of physical nature. God not only permits but governs evil; nevertheless the sinfulness thereof proceeds not from God but the creatures. Through providence and the action of common grace, God shows good to all His creatures. Yet there is a special care of providence given to the church of Christ.
