Telos: To instruct the church on the qualifications of eldership: for the church to nominate, for the men to work towards.
This is for all of us to hear. We must hear it so that we know how to choose our elders. We must hear it also to know what the Lord would have us to aim for in various aspects of our live. If elders are to be examples for the flock (1Pt 5:3) then surely we must seek to imitate at least some of their qualities.
With that in mind, let’s look at the qualifications listed by Paul. Now, Paul says many things, which he does not in our text organise. However, it may be useful for us to organise what he has to say under 7 sets of qualifications, namely:
