Solomon's use of the word "wisdom" in typical Hebrew fashion is more practical than philosohical and it implies more than knowledge. It carries the notions of ability for proper behavior, success, common sense and wit. Solomon frequently mentions death in Ecclesiastes: 1:4, 2:14-17; 3:18-20; 5:15-16, 6:6, 8:8, 9:2-3,12 and 12:708 In Proverbs he mentions death 18 times. Solomon "hated life", but-he was not considering suicide. Some noted men mentioned in the Bible wanted to die: Job, Moses, Elijah & Jonah; all finally changed their minds. The New Testament verifies the certainty of death: Hebrews 9:27 & Revelation 21:8 Promies of God: John 11:25 and Revelation 21:4 Christ's sacrifice-our forgiveness-takes the sting out of death. In spite that all men will die, wisdom is still better than folly. The wise man sees that death is coming and prepares and lives accordingly. While the fool walks in darkness and is caught unprepared. We live by the promises of God...not by explanations! |
