Why does Jesus send the healed leper to the priests? Luke's account says that he is sent 'as a sign to them'. Is this not Jesus offering his credentials to the leaders of the nation and giving them fair opportunity to acclaim him the anointed one of God?
In the very next story Jesus forgives the sins of a paralyzed man in front of a vast crowd of Pharisees from every village, town and city in Galilee and Judea. The Pharisees are scandalized and believe Jesus has trapped himself into an act of blasphemy... until Jesus completes the work by making the paralytic carry his own bed home (the paralytic wasn't complaining). Is this not a moment of offering his credentials to the influential leaders of the nation?
But, as history will reveal, even miracles can't change a hard heart.
