The healing of a man born blind since birth is the scene for the next conflict between Jesus and the gate keepers of Jewish piety. Their obsession with the meticulous observance of their traditions makes them blind to not only this powerful demonstration of the love of God but also to the truth of who Jesus is. They care more about their lifeless and loveless religion than a man’s sight being wonderfully restored.
The irony is that the man whose sight is restored when interrogated by some of the Pharisees actually exposes the willful blindness of those who claimed to see things clearly. Jesus not only causes the blind to see but he causes those who will not come into the light to become blind. How crucial to be sure that we are seeing clearly and are not ourselves blind!
