2. Servants of the Lord, grow in faithfulness. God’s servant remained faithful even when all of his ministry seemed to be futile, when his life seemed to be a failure (Is 49). Christians, we need to grow in faithfulness. In doing so we’ll glorify God’s servant. We need to be effective weapons (well equipped and continually sharpened) but then we need to be faithful——faithful in work, faithful in evangelism, and faithful in parenting——especially when our efforts seem to be futile. God doesn’t call us to be successful and famous. He calls us to be faithful servants.
3. Servants of the Lord, grow in learning. In Is 50 God’s servant wakes up morning by morning to meet with the Lord and submit himself again to God’s instruction. O God, make us like your servant! The most famous devotional book ever published is Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening (Alistair Begg’s version published by Crossway is excellent.) Spurgeon began the devotional with the words of Isaiah 50:4, “Morning by morning he awakens…my ear to hear as those who are taught.” Spurgeon’s two brief readings a day have helped God’s servants for the past century and a half. Beginning the day with meditation on Scripture and fellowship with the Lord help God’s servants to recommit themselves to the Lord and draw strength for the challenges ahead.
