There is a saying, 'Time and tide wait for no man'. This is conspicuously true in God's providence. Like King David (and Jesus) we may have to wait long for his promise to be fulfilled. But when his time comes nothing will stop it. And we need to be ready. That is why this picture of a believer's life is important to us. When David came to the throne it was the culmination of long preparation; he made a covenant with his people; but his victory was contested. Those three things are reflected in the life of Jesus and the lives of his people. One of the key matters is to know how to act when God's time does come. David's army was told to wait till they heard the sound of marching in the treetops; that would be a sign that the Lord of Hosts was going before them into battle. They had to act fast! God grant we may recognise his timing, and engage in his service with renewed faith and vigour.
