Giving, like so many other areas in the Christian life requires a major paradigm shift in our thinking such as: the way to find happiness is through repentance, the way to greatness is to humble ourselves, the way to find personal fulfillment is to die to self, the way to gain eternal life is to stop doing and start trusting. Jim Elliot said it so well in regards to life and money; He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.
Fifteen percent of everything Jesus taught related to money – more verses than heaven and hell combined! There is a fundamental connection between our spiritual lives and how we handle our money. We may try to divorce our faith and our finances, but God says they are inseparable. Look with me at Matt 6:19-21
I. Jesus' Prohibition (v. 19)
II. Jesus' Exhortation (v. 20)
III. Jesus' Explanation (v. 21)
II Cor 9:7 states, 'God loves a cheerful giver.' That doesn't mean you give only when you feel cheerful. Cheerfulness generally comes during and after the act of obedience – not before it. Present joy comes from anticipating future joy.
