Rebellion has consequences. The book of Numbers records the tragic story of the failure of God's people to enter the Promised Land. The consequence of Israel's continuous rebellion to God, his servants, and his law, was forty years of wilderness wandering and the death of an entire generation. Nevertheless, God was faithful to bring his people to the Promised Land, even as he gave us a greater leader than Moses to bring us into a greater land. The NT understands Israel's rebellion as the sin of unbelief which results in the failure to enter the new creation rest in heaven (cf. Heb. 3-4), and this tragic story was written for us, "that we might not desire evil as they did" (1 Cor. 10:6).
