Although Paul rejoiced in Romans, Chapter 8 over the certain fulfillment of God's promises for those who are called according to his purpose, he was grieved by the reality that many of his own kinsmen in the flesh were still in a state of unbelief and subject to the curse of the law. In fact, Paul's heaviness of heart for his unbelieving kinsmen was so consuming that he expressed his own willingness to be accursed from God himself if such a sacrifice could result in their salvation. Furthermore, in these opening verses of Romans, Chapter 9, Paul explains why the unbelief of his kinsmen was so tragic to observe, and why the blessings that they had formerly received offered no true assurance they would be the recipients of God's saving grace in Jesus Christ.
