The scene shifts from earth in the first three chapters of Revelation to heaven in chapter four. There’s also a shift in time from the present to the future. John had faithfully recorded what he had seen of the glory of Jesus and the current condition of the churches (compare Revelation 1:19). Now he would describe what would take place later, events that were future to both him and to us today. This new phase of Jesus’ revelation to John would take place from the perspective of heaven, so Jesus first unveiled the glory of heaven. Central to this heavenly vision was the throne room of God. This vision of God on His royal throne helps us remember that the awesome splendor of God’s sovereign rule elicits endless worship. Revelation 4:1-11 revolves around three distinct aspect of God’s nature—His sovereignty, His power, and His holiness.
