It is important for Christians to know what they are. Only then will they live productive lives. Jesus encourages both with his illustration of a vine with its branches. We are his planting and his possession. He cares for us for our own sake but also so we would become productive. The term 'branch' reminds us that we are dependent on Christ, and that we are related to one another. We should make it a matter of conscience to think about what God wants from us - productive of what? The 'fruit' includes: faith in Christ, love for God, justice and mercy, and the graces of the Spirit. To obtain that fruit God 'prunes' us. He instructs by his Word and uses our experiences. It may be painful and we need to remember the glorious outcome. Our task is to 'remain' in Christ. That includes: maintaining our commitment to him, maintaining the relationship with him keeping our confidence in in him, being ready to obey him, and drawing from his resources. It all reminds us that there are consequences for all that we are doing presently. Failing to remain in Christ leads to a withered spiritual life. Remaining in him leads to the fruit of answered prayer which also brings glory to God. So we should make this a matter of prayer, being careful to spend more time with him. We should be careful to learn what Christ has done and promised, and to put his Word into practice.
