What does God want Abounding Grace Church to look like? This passage before us will answer three questions about the church. 1) What is the Church? [read 12-14] Many Different Members formed into One Body of Christ. –v12-14 There should be a deep commitment to the unity of the Body of Christ. It should be recognized, protected, enjoyed. Which leads to our second question today. 2) What is God's Vision for the Church? What does He want His Church to look like? To display His glory in our unity and care for each other. –v25-26 What an incredible vision God has for His Church! But there are things that could hinder this from happening here at AGC, which leads to point #3… 3) What threatens this vision? In this passage, we see two threats – two ways of thinking that act against this vision. Two wrong attitudes that could happen here (or may already be present) here at AGC. a) I don't belong - feelings of inferiority/insignificance as a member of the body -v15-16 The second wrong attitude that threatens God's vision for His church is… a) I don't need them– feeling of superiority and self-sufficient wrongfully independent. - v21 To both groups, the “I don't belong” and the “I don't need them” groups Paul said – look at your body. He also gave a second response. Paul's second response is…Trust God's design [18] [24b-26] Concluding Applications: 1) Membership in the local church is a biblical idea – an implicit requirement in the Christian life. If we are in Christ we are attached to His body and to other members. 2) Let's have a culture of mutual care for one another. 3) Find recover discouraged members.
