Following the Herod account, Luke reengaged his narrative where he left off, namely with Paul and Barnabas' return to Antioch from Jerusalem (cf. 12:25 with 11:30). This return set the stage for the next major development in the progress of Christ's kingdom. That development was the inauguration of the global mission, and Luke appropriately devoted the balance of his account in Acts to this work (ref. 1:8). It was at Antioch that the Spirit's call came to Paul and Barnabas - a call for them to take the gospel to distant lands in accordance with Jesus' commission to Paul (9:15). The formal Gentile mission - hinted at in Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian, prepared for in Saul's conversion and divinely affirmed and clarified in Cornelius' house - was finally at hand. The gospel of forgiveness, renewal and reconciliation was about to go to the ends of the earth.
