Mercy is more than simply giving a gift. Mercy is a statement-making gift. 1 - It makes a statement about the giver. 2 - It makes a statement about the recipient.
There is a warning in Scripture against being unmerciful. Psalm 109 James 2:13
Christians should be willing to be merciful to everyone.
Objections to this command. 1) We will eventually use up our resources. 2) Others have more resources and are better suited to be merciful. 3) I don't have anything to give.
6 traits to describe the attitude of mercy. Mercy is giving: 1 - freely 2 - what is ours to give 3 - humbly 4 - wisely 5 - thankfully 6 - for the glory of Christ
Therefore, as the puritan Thomas Watson has written, "Mercy is a melting disposition whereby we lay to heart the miseries of others and are ready on all occasions to be instrumental for their good."
And Christians are to have this disposition because this was disposition of Christ towards us! Philippians 2 & Isaiah 53.
Mercy is one of the few things in life that grows as it is poured out. And this is true because the source of all mercy is an infinite God.
Lamentations 3:23: "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning."
