Why does Paul purify himself and pay the vows for four men to take vows in the temple? Don't his writings teach us that all of this ritual is nothing when compared to the surpassing riches of Christ? Doesn't Paul repeatedly state that Jewish rituals, such as circumcision are of no consequence under the New Covenant in Christ? Then why agree to submit to Jewish rituals, particularly as a way of demonstrating that he isn't opposed to them?
In this sermon, the second of a two part examination of Acts 21:17-26, we ask the question: "What is Paul's reasoning in performing this act?"
We will also ask whether Christians should adopt Jewish practices and mark Jewish feasts, as some do, or whether this practice is sinful or dangerous.
Paul gives us ample information to understand his decision, in both Romans 14 and 1 Corinthians 9 he speaks of matters of conscience and how the mature believer should approach such things.
