In Romans 2:12-16 Paul proves that God shows no partiality when He judges by anticipating and answering three hypothetical questions: (1) "How is God impartial? He has already favored the Jews by giving them the Law!" Answer: All are judged in light of their sin, whether they have the written Law or not (v. 12); and it is the doers of the Law who are justified, not those who merely hear it (v. 13). (2) "How is God impartial? The Gentiles can't 'do' a Law about which they have not heard!" Answer: The become a law to themselves when they naturally do what the Law requires (v. 14); and they prove that the Law's requirement is written on their hearts, confirmed by their conscience, and tested by their thoughts. (3) "Is there any hope in light of God's penetrating impartiality (v. 16c)?" Answer: Yes! God is patient (v.13) and Yes! Christ has come (16b)!
