The Covenant of Grace obviously spans the entirety of human history up to the Second Coming of Christ. The covenant of grace encompasses all the covenants after the fall of man. Circumcision was the sign and seal of that covenant in the old covenant, but what is it in the new covenant? There has to be a physical representation of spiritual truths in the new covenant as there was in the old. Baptism is said to be the visible sign and seal of that spiritual circumcision of the heart performed by the Holy Spirit. Inspired writers of the New Testament such as Peter and Paul make the association of baptism with circumcision. The importance of seeing the connection of circumcision with baptism is that we can understand the value of giving our children the sign and seal of the covenant by baptism as Old Testament saints gave the sign and seal of circumcision to their children.
