Though the Lord Jesus follows after Moses as a prophet Who speaks God's Words to us, Jesus is far greater than Moses!
In the end, Moses' death barred him from leading Israel to the promised land. After all that labor and travail and sacrifice and faithfulness, because he sinned, Moses died at the hand of the Lord before he could receive the promised land.
Worse, God revealed to Moses just before he died that Israel would rebel, and turn away from God, and He would judge them and forsake them!
The Mosaic Covenant was Moses' life's work, but he died knowing it would be broken and overthrown, and never getting to the promised land.
Most of the work done by great leaders fades away quickly after they die. Very little of substance remains even a few decades later.
Moses' life and death mirrored that same futility, and he died, and God buried him, and nobody knows where.
Herein lies the greatest difference between Moses and Christ: Moses' death portended the slow but inexorable death of Moses' work; but Jesus' death was the very victory of all He had put His hand to: redeeming His people from sin and death by dying for us on the Cross!
Moses died before leading a single person to the Promised Land, but Jesus' death perfected Him as the Captain Who leads many sons unto Glory!
No doubt the disciples knew Jesus' death was the death of their dream. To think that Messiah should fail in the end by dying! What bitter grief they must have felt to see the Savior's hope lost in death just like Moses' was.
But they had not believed the promises of the prophets and of Christ Himeself that He would die to redeem His people, and rise again to take them to Glory!
