It is likely that when Peter wrote, "clothe yourselves with humility toward one another," that he was reflecting back some thirty plus years to the event narrated by John in chapter 13 of his Gospel (washing the disciples' feet). That reflection is considered under the heading, "what is it to be clothed with humility toward one another?". The reason for the imperative ("for God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble") is also addressed. John Brown writes, "Oh, how happy the church, where all the elders and all the members are habitually under the influence of Christian humility!"
