The Hour Has Come (Jn 12)
Intro: Results of Jesus' Public Ministry
Belief & love in: (1) his anointing by Mary at Bethany, (2) his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, (3) his final ministry in the temple where even Greeks now have come to see Jesus.
Unbelief & anger in: (1) anger of Judas, (2) anger of the rulers, (3) those at the temple who saw the signs & still had not believed.
Exposition
1. Anointing of Dead at Bethany (v1-11)
Mary sees this as supreme act of devotion. Judas, as a supreme act of extravagance. Jesus, as a gift fit for a king-or; rather, fit for a king's burial.
2. Triumphal Entry at Jerusalem (v12-19)
Up to this point Jesus' "hour had not yet come" (2:4, 7:6, 7:30, 8:20). But now, Jesus says, "The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified" (v23). But what does this mean?
3. Christ's Glorification in Dying for Salvation of Sinners (v23-24, 27-33)
"Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up" (Is 52:13, ESV).
"We beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth" (1:14). "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (3:14-15, see Phil 2:5-8).
4. Christ's Vocation in Calling Us to do the Same (v. 25-26)
People aren't going to be saved unless you tell them, unless you take up your own cross and follow me. And you aren't going to live the Christian life unless you love one another just as I have loved you.
