It is winter in Jerusalem, wet and windy. Still, most of the city is joyful, celebrating the Festival of Dedication. Jesus is walking in Solomon's Portico, out of the wind among the columns. Then suddenly He is surrounded, like a city besieged by a hostile army. The Jewish leaders are back, and they demand a plain answer: "Are You the Christ?" It's a trap! But Jesus answers: "I told you and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father's name, these testify of Me." Then the Good Shepherd adds this: "I and the Father, We are one." The Jews then picked up stones again to stone Him.
Now the encircling Jews stand with stones in hand, ready to kill Jesus. Their faces are red, their chests are heaving, the veins on their necks are bulging. His face is calm.
He speaks to them plainly and carefully exposes their error and defends His claims. It is an act of authority and an expression of mercy. Who knows, perhaps some might even repent and believe?
Jesus' winter encounter with the Jews. Began in John 10:21-31. Now we'll unpack the rest of John's account in 10:31-42. The outline is simple:
Jesus defends His claim to be God and many believe. 1. The Jews attack (vv. 31-33) 2. Jesus doubles down (vv.34-38). 3. Many believe (vv.39-42).
