Before looking at Paul's exhortations at the end of Colossians 3 for those working as servant or master, God's intention "from the beginning" for work and labor is outlined in this sermon.
In Genesis 1-2 we see the glorious design of work and labor. The man and woman were made in the image of God and so were made to reflect God's pattern of work and rest. And He gave them important and difficult work to do, for His glory.
But in Genesis 3 we see that sin and the fall of man disrupted and disfigured this high calling of work. Both man's condition and environment now have made work toilsome and hard.
In the redemption we find through Christ Jesus, however, for the Christian, work is again elevated to its rightful and meaningful position. For the Christian is able to work and labor for his Lord and Master Jesus Christ.
