Paul's boast is in the Cross, this is his sincere desire. He relates to us what the cross has done for him. Our only boast is in the Cross. This calls us to a high level of discipleship. Paul refers not to the wooded cross, but to the doctrine of the atoning work of Christ. For Paul, he only wants the cross to be his exclusive boast. The Cross is a source of intense joy, every thing he rejoices in points back to the Cross. Every privilege we have was bought by the Cross. No one can boast in the Cross without a spiritual change, which is only possible through the Holy Spirit.
