The sending forth of the Son of God into the world is particularly described as being the work of God the Father. Paul is not speaking here about the Godhead in general, i.e. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost viewed collectively. Rather he is speaking about the Son of God being the object of a certain action of God. This can only be understood if we view the action to be that of God the Father.
This is the same word that is used of the Father sending forth the Holy Spirit in Gal 4:6.
We are here reminded that the work of redemption begun with God. It was not the sinner who sought the Lord rather it was the Lord in the person of His Son who came seeking the sinner. It was God that first moved towards the sinner.
This fact magnifies the greatness of God. That one who is so infinitely holy should purpose to save sinners by the death of His Son is altogether remarkable. He gave His Son for those who were made from the clay.
That He should purpose to send His Son to die at the cross to save the lowest of His rational and moral creatures is also remarkable. He did not purpose to save any of the angels that sinned who are higher creatures by nature.
However, He purposes to save those who were made lower than the angels. He condescends to send His own dear Son into this world to go to the cross and there to suffer, bleed and die for an unworthy and undeserving humanity.
In outlining this fact Paul here highlights three specific aspects of that coming into the world which we want to consider.
