Our faithful God promises His people a rest from our spiritual wilderness wanderings in the finished work of Jesus Christ, as the Israelites could have found a rest from their wilderness wanderings in the Promised Land, Canaan, under Joshua. Canaan is a type of heavenly rest and Joshua is a type of Christ. Jesus stressed that everlasting life starts when we trust Him, that we can rest now. But there is a more perfect rest to come, the experience of the believer different in heaven than here on earth. Whilst we stop striving to earn salvation, resting in the finished work of Christ, we should be diligent to work out our faith with fear and trembling, heeding the warning of Psalm 95. |
