Peter's question concerning the maximum number of times when he would be required to forgive a brother for sinning against him revealed that neither he nor the other disciples understood the real nature of forgiveness. The Lord's reply indicated that the standard is that of God in Heaven, and that He puts no limitation on the incidents of forgiveness. Also implied in this text is the reality that to confess and to forgive requires humility. True forgiveness involves moving away from that which is forgiven. True forgiveness does not seek vindication.
